I spent my early career teaching and have a deep passion for lifelong learning and creating a life of dreams fulfilled. Accomplishing educational goals is a significant step toward this. I tell my audiences that “I want to create a widely diversified portfolio of unforgettable memories,” and I encourage others to do the same.

While each of us has an important purpose and a unique story to tell, we all need a boost at some point to give our dreams momentum.

Burrus Scholarship Gives Dreams a Boost

A couple years ago, the idea to support a few individuals each year in the pursuit of their educational dreams arose. These individuals also maintain a focus on the greater community in which they live. That being said, I created the Daniel Burrus Scholarship Fund.

The award is given once a year to individuals in high school who plan on attending college or are full-time college students in good academic standing with a desire to continue their education and better impact their community.

I’m proud to announce the three winners of our Fall 2018 award.

The scholarship recipients’ essays demonstrated how they each applied my Anticipatory Organization (AO) principles, such as Hard Trends, the Law of Opposites, Problem Skipping and Choose to Be Extraordinary, in their life, work and community. Let me introduce them.

Lorena Gomez excels at biology and is the first generation in her family to attend graduate school. Lorena says that receiving this scholarship will boost her self-confidence, knowing that she not only completed a very important task, but also took the responsibility of searching for scholarships that will help her pay for her education.

Lorena envisions herself staring her own business and establishing a strong brand. She intends on starting off working as a bilingual marketing research analyst to gather data overseeing competitors’ strengths and weaknesses in specific regions. Determined to gain a comprehensive understanding of the marketing field and with interest in how businesses use international marketing to adapt to the changing conditions and stay competitive, Lorena believes being a graduate student at Clemson will greatly contribute to further expertise in this area.

Elijah Choice has served as a volunteer intern for Operation HOPE, a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing financial literacy to individuals and families in economically disadvantaged areas in metropolitan Los Angeles. During this time, Elijah witnessed the transformative power that guidance, support and proper application of information can have on the emotional, mental and financial well-being of people.

Elijah traveled from the multicultural city of Los Angeles to attend college in rural High Point, located in North Carolina, with ambitions of obtaining a well-rounded education majoring in business management. He has taken core classes and continues to be involved in community service as a member of The Bonner Leader Program, which focuses on civic responsibility and social innovation in the Greater High Point area. He volunteers with The Macedonia Family Resource Center, which provides educational, counseling, family planning and financial literacy outreach services in the community.

Elijah’s vision for the future is to graduate and work in the financial services industry prior to attending business school and working with a top firm in commercial or investment banking. Ultimately, Elijah plans to launch a private equity firm that supports state treasuries, municipalities, police and fire department pension funds while aiding financial literacy philanthropic initiatives through a foundation.

Akash Singh is attending Columbia College in Chicago. He is studying filmmaking in hopes of directing a feature film. He has been through and witnessed many struggles in his life, so he hopes to use his experience and empathy to impact the world and make it a better place.

Since starting school, Akash has thrown himself wholeheartedly into his studies. He is committed to not only getting all that he can out of school but to also giving back as much as possible. As he learns about film and what it takes to make short films, Akash is also discovering the community and learning what he can do to be a productive member of it.

The inspiration and intelligence these young people bring to their communities and the world is boundless. Small acts of support grow exponentially. Keep making an impact on the next generation of leaders in your community.

The Daniel Burrus Scholarship Fund was created to be a resource for those students who applied AO principles to help them achieve their goals and objectives, while leading others along the way. By supporting students to shape a positive future, I believe our youth can be better prepared to become transformational leaders within their communities and achieve enormous success.
